Why the blues, Mr.B?
Such a great question! Every year we start all the EMS jazz bands with several weeks of NOTHING BUT THE BLUES! We learn about the form of the blues, blues scales, blue notes, and how to improvise a solo. There are many reasons for this and they include:
- Ease of form- There are only three chords (I/IV/V), so it is easy to get the rhythm section groovin' away, and the 12 bar form us short enough for everyone to take a good number of solos per rehearsal!
- Historical Relevance- This is something that we have neglected to learn about due to limited rehearsal time! Now with these new webpages you can explore the history of the blues of your own home! The blues has a rich history and we, as young musicians in a jazz band are obligated to learn from the past! Take the time to explore the interactive timeline on the next page and to listen to the recordings. There are hours worth of material here for you to enjoy! There is no grade for any of this, the reward is your own learning! Learn from the greats as we continue on our best to be great ourselves! Happy listening!
